What Can We Grow For You?

June 2008
6/1/08 - We got almost 1 1/2" of rain over the weekend, and all of the little seedlings have really responded well.  I've been watering the beets and chard on a daily basis, but nothing beats a good soaking rain to get things going.  The Jerusalem Artichokes that I planted last week have already started to sprout!

6/3/08 - This afternoon we transplanted all of the summer squash, set up the drip irrigation line and put up the row cover on hoops.  We also planted the corn and transplanted the pumpkins in with it.  Since I can't use row covers on the pumpkins, I'm going to have to keep a close eye on them to make sure there are no squash beetles around!

6/7/08 - It's going to be a busy weekend in the garden.  We need to set out the winter squash, plant the turnips, potatoes and two new 50' rows of asparagus.

6/9/08 - This morning I planted the potatoes, asparagus and turnips.  I also got the winter squash transplanted, laid the drip irrigation line, and set up the row cover on hoops.

6/15/08 - We finally got the tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and okra transplanted, as well as the cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes and a second planting of winter squash under row covers.  I put a "handful" of Cock-A-Doodle-Doo (OMRI listed) fertilizer in with each seedling when I transplanted them.  After the "invasion of the squash bugs" of 2005 we have become firm believers in using row covers on all of our squash, cucumbers and melons.  We haven't had a single one of those nasty little buggers since then.  Of course, we rotate where we plant them every year and that helps.

6/19/08 - The heavy duty tomato cages that I ordered from the Texas Tomato Cage company arrived!  I'm going to set them up this weekend if the weather is nice.

6/23/08 - Today I picked the first Sugar Snap Peas and did a second planting of corn in with the melons and winter squash.

6/26/08 - Today we met with Burke, the new chef at the Lakewood Inn Restaurant.  He has made a lot of changes to the cuisine they serve there (it was always wonderful) and changes the menu every couple of weeks.  He can't wait to get garlic scapes from us!

6/27/08 - The garlic scapes have reached the perfect amount of "curl" to pick.  We harvested about 5 pounds.

6/30/08 - The rest of the month has just flown by, with LOTS of rain so things are looking a little waterlogged.  We need several days of warm, dry sunny weather to get things going.  I really haven't had enough time to take any pictures this month, but promise lots more for July!
