Farm Tour
Welcome to the Virtual Tour of Stonewall Farm and Gardens!

In April, we start most of our seedlings indoors under grow lights.  We usually get our first planting of peas and Fava beans in the ground by mid-April.  There's an old saying here in Maine that if you plant your peas on Patriot's Day (a regional holiday in April celebrated by Massachusetts and Maine), you'll be picking them by the 4th of July.  Most years that's a pretty good planting schedule, but I think this year we'll still have snow on the ground in mid-April here.  It's been a snowy winter!

We put up our first greenhouse in May 2005.  We use it primarliy for hardening off the seedlings for a week or two before they get transplanted.  The cool weather crops like broccoli, lettuce and cabbage usually get transplanted in early May.

By June, most of the transplants are in the ground. We tried out red plastic mulch on some of the tomatoes a few years ago, but didn't seem to notice much of a difference.

By the middle of June we start picking lettuce and onions, and by early July we're picking peas.

Everything in the gardens just seems to explode from mid-July through the end of September, or first part of October.  It does seem that the date of the first frost has been later over the past 16 years.  When we first moved to Maine, we often had our first frost by Labor Day weekend, and for the past 5 years, we haven't gotten our first killing frost until the end of September or Early October.

Of course no tour of the farm would be complete without meeting the other members of our family.

This is Buddy, our 10 year old Keeshond

And this is Buddy with his cool summer haircut...

Even with his bad hip, Buddy LOVES to run

We have four cats - Roxie, Toby, Tasha and B'elana.  Toby and Tasha are brother and sister and are big Maine Coon  cats.

This is our second Keeshond.  His name is Manny and he is seven years old.  We adopted him in October, 2005.

Buddy and Manny absolutely love to help us out in the garden.

We drove down to Catskill, NY last weekend to pick up the newest member of our family.  He is a 12 week old Keeshond pup named Sam.  Here are a few of his baby pictures.

He is adjusting well to his new home and getting along well with his brothers and sisters, although the cats aren't quite sure what to make of him.  He is one little furry bundle of love and energy.  We've nicknamed him "Puddles" for obvious reasons...

Patriot's Day Weekend (4/19/08)

It's been a little over a month since we adopted Sammy, and he's made himself right at home.  He continues to improve with regards to housebreaking, and Buck took him to his first obedience class last week.  It is just amazing to see how fast he's growing!
